Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Boom: Tourist Expenditure Surpasses $67 Billion in 2023

According to figures from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the total tourist expenditure in Saudi Arabia in 2023 amounted to over $67 billion, a testament to the Kingdom’s economic potential as a top-tier tourism destination. The Saudi Tourism Authority has emphasized that this remarkable growth is a direct result of the Kingdom’s focused efforts to enhance connectivity and infrastructure. Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector has experienced unprecedented growth, solidifying its position as a key player in the global tourism industry. In 2023, the Kingdom attracted 27 million international visitors, who collectively spent over $37 billion, according to the Kingdom’s Ministry of Tourism. This influx of tourists significantly boosted the Saudi economy, with the total number of domestic and international tourists surpassing 109 million. This marks a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to diversify its economy away from oil dependency, as outlined in its ambitious Vision 2030 initiative.

In a significant milestone, the Saudi Tourism Authority announced that the Kingdom welcomed over 100 million tourists in 2023, representing a 56% growth compared to 2019. This achievement was reached seven years ahead of the original target set by Vision 2030, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s rapid emergence as a global tourism powerhouse. Of these 100 million tourists, approximately 77 million were domestic travelers, reflecting the Kingdom’s success in promoting internal tourism alongside international efforts. A substantial portion of this growth can be attributed to visitors from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. Approximately 8.6 million travelers from GCC countries made their way to Saudi Arabia in 2023, underscoring the Kingdom’s appeal within the region. Among these, Bahrain led with 3.5 million visitors, followed by Kuwait with 2.3 million, the UAE with 1.4 million, Qatar with 1.1 million, and Oman with 455,000 visitors. The economic impact of these GCC visitors was considerable, with over $3.9 billion spent during their visits.
